Communism for rent… Wednesday, Jul 2 2008

Second day of class. We learned some good idioms to describe how people look. Including how to tell a girl that her waist is the size of a bug’s neck!

I signed up for an Acadian History workshop that wasn’t until 3.00, so after lunch I went home and changed (that’s the norm here… it’s really cloudy in the morning and stiflingly hot in the afternoon). If it was possible, our classroom was even hotter than it was outside. Thank God we walked down to the ACed Acadian Museum on campus. However, tomorrow we’re in the class all day, so we’ll see if I end up coming home in a water bottle (on account of the melting…)

Onto dinner, which was a BBQ. I was assaulted by this massive, Herculean bug that I’m told was a june bug, but it took Matt from Vancouver a couple swipes to get it off. I was too mentally incapacitated to do it myself. That thing was huge!!

And then… SOCCER BASEBALL!! It was only ten girls and Sebastian (one of the moderators) who ended up playing, but it was so much fun! Really brought me back to my elementary school days. Even though I pretty much slaughtered my ankle kicking and running, it was worth it. I’m sure my ankle will be fine by tomorrow. It’s taken worse blows than a rolling soccer ball.

I went up to Caylie, Jamie and Amanda’s room for a drink and we chatted for a bit, then I hopped back downstairs to have a shower. Then I stayed up too late reading (again…)

Bon anniversaire, Canada! Wednesday, Jul 2 2008

While the rest of you had today off, this was out first day of classes. I made my way to the Jacqueline Bouchard building for my level 4 class. My prof is fantastic – she’s very animated, so even if you miss some words, you still understand her. After introductions (you students know the first-day drill) we did a dictation quiz and then a quiz on verbs. The verbs quiz was very frustrating, because I remember learning it, I just couldn’t remember the construction.

After lunch and a bit of free time during which all of us changed our clothes (it’s cloudy in the morning and bloody hot in the afternoon), we went for a campus tour. There was a scavenger hunt version and a formal, walking version. Because of the heat, most of us walked. Plus, that tour was being led by Mathieu. Suffice to say… oh-la-la!

Dinner and more free time of sitting in air conditioned buildings, then we all walked downtown and spectacularly messed up Moncton traffic. The fireworks were along the Petit Codiac and they were amazing! They did bring a pang of homesickness, because I knew that three hours later, the Skeleton Lakers would be launching fireworks at the boat launch. But, Jess, Danielle and Elgin made it a great time! Because we’re over 18, we had the choice to stay downtown. We went for a drink at the Old Triangle Pub and then took a cab home, where we all had blissful sleeps!
